2018 Waste management statistics and overall recycling measures
In 2017, 7.70 million tonnes of solid waste was generated, a decrease of 110,000 tonnes from 7.81 million tonnes in 2016. The amount of waste recycled also fell by 50,000 tonnes from 4.77 million tonnes in 2016 to 4.72 million tonnes in 2017. Overall, the recycling rate remained unchanged at 61 per cent from 2016.
The decrease in the amount of waste recycled in 2017 was largely due to lower amounts of wood waste, plastic and paper recycled. On the other hand, there was an increase in the amount of food waste recycled by food manufacturers and wider adoption of food waste digesters.
Both the non-domestic and domestic recycling rates remained stable at 76% and 21% respectively from 2016.
Waste management and recycling statistics for 2017
|Waste Type||Waste Disposed of (tonnes)||Waste Recycled (tonnes)||Waste Generated (tonnes)||Recycling Rate (%)|
|Ash and sludge||214,800||28,600||243,400||12%|
|Others (stones, ceramic, rubber, etc.)||319,300||7,100||326,400||2%|
Metal recovered from IBA for recycling is excluded from total waste disposed. Wood and horticultural waste recycled include 347,300 tonnes used as fuel in biomass power plants.
